How to play
The answer is a surname between four and nine letters, and the row width tells you which. Guess a word of that length and every letter comes back green, gold or dark, exactly as you would expect. You may burn a row on a probe word — a guess does not have to be a real player. Surnames that are also everyday words are never the answer, however good the man.

Six guesses at a ballplayer's surname. The answer is between four and nine letters long and the width of the board tells you which — that is the only clue you get for free. Guess a word of that length and every letter comes back marked: right letter in the right place, right letter in the wrong place, or not in the name at all. Your guess does not have to be a real player, so you can burn a row on a probe word.
Strategy & tips
- Open with a word rich in vowels and common consonants. You are looking for letters, not for a player, on the first row.
- The length is doing more work than it looks. Nine-letter surnames are a much smaller set than five-letter ones.
- Watch for doubled letters. The board tells you how many of a letter the answer holds, not merely whether it holds one.
- Surnames that are also everyday words are never the answer, so stop testing them.
About MLB Wordle
The answer is a surname rather than a full name, because a word game guesses a word — which is also why the three Randy Johnsons never collide here. Surnames that are ordinary English words are excluded outright: solving ROSE or TROUT from the letters is a word game, not a baseball one, and being famous is not an exemption from the rule.

Does my guess have to be a real player?
No. Any word of the right length is accepted, so you can spend a row on a probe. Rejecting non-players would leak which letters belong to somebody.
Why was a famous surname not the answer?
If it is also an everyday English word it is excluded, however good the player. Recognising the answer is meant to be the payoff, and star status is not an exemption from the rule.
Can the same surname come up twice?
No. Answers never repeat — the pool runs to well over a year at one a day, so serving one twice would be a choice rather than a necessity.
